History Of The G Clef Sign

One of the most familiar symbols in music—even among people who don't read music— is the treble clef sign, more properly known as the G clef sign.
(The symbol itself is a G clef sign; if it's placed on a specific place on a staff, it signifies treble clef.)

The predecessor to the concept of clef was the practice of placing a letter—a note name—around a particular line on a staff to indicate the location of that note.
As with modern clef signs, the other notes can be determined by that anchor.

In time, the G became stylized, and later an elongated S was superimposed. The S stands for "sol," which is the name of G in a fixed-do system.

Now, your assignment is to figure out how the modern bass clef sign evolved from the letter F!
