MECHANICAL TOYS

For Girls And Boys

make music and noise

This little guy has a simple drum kit, much like the earliest "trap" sets.
("Trap" is short for "contraption.")

His left hand plays a snare drum, the central instrument in a typical percussion section.
His right hand plays a crash cymbal, maybe a little too much.
His left foot is opening and closing a pair of cymbals, called the hi-hat.
His right foot is pedaling the bass drum, often called the kick drum for obvious reasons.
Modern drum kits usually include at least one other cymbal and two or three tom-toms.

This old-fashioned toy is operated by turning a crank, and cams on its shaft move the rods.
(A ghost from our nearby haunted restaurant was kind enough to provide the unseen hand.)

Cleverly engineered mechanical toys such as this were popular in the days before video games.
I built this one from a kit I received as a gift. I enjoy playing with it when I get cranky.

But fortunately, we found a new one right away.
There were immediate repercussions.
