Logos For Amateur Groups

For many years, I was privileged to put together musical groups.
Part of the fun of that was creating names and accompanying logos.
Here is a sampling of posters that were used during their performances.
My amateur groups under my amateur direction received my amateur artwork!

THE BEACH BUMS

This was a family band.
In addition to primary residence with a pool,
they had a weekend house on a lake.
So while on vacation, they went to the beach.
Of course! They came up with the name themselves.
When performing, they wore tie-dyes and shades.

BENJAMMIN'

We put this group together to feature a student drummer.
His given name was Benjamin, so naturally . . .
a fellow student came up with this stage name.
This led to the formation a jazz combo.

THE BOY WONDRAS

A band of brothers, family name was Wondra.
The original nucleus was the siblings,
a keyboard player and a guitar player.
Later they were joined by a drummer friend.
Yours truly supplied the bass parts.

IDA & ITRA

This ensemble featured two friends,
one on clarinet and one on flute.
The name of the first was  _ I _ D _ A _.
The name of the other was  _ I _ T _ R _ A.
Filling in the blanks is up to you.
(Hint: It was not   W I L D C A T   &   W I S T E R I A .)

CUSATO

Technically he was a solo artist I played backup for.
Another guessing game: What was his last name?
It lent itself nicely to a familiar-looking logo.

MIXED ENSEMBLE

Naming a mixed ensemble this is like
a classical composer naming a sonata "Sonata,"
or writing a minuet and naming it "Minuet."
At least I tried to be creative with the poster.

MYTHICAL CREATURES

It's not unusual for artists to begin to build a repertoire
before coming up with a name under which to perform.
This group's repertoire included "Puff The Magic Dragon"
and "Part Of Your World" from "The Little Mermaid."

PHANTOM VIKINGS

I was never very good at throwing darts; however,
the first word was chosen by picking a random adjective
and the second came from a list of unrelated nouns.
The resulting name resonated with the musicians,
because they were students at a junior high school
whose mascot was Viking. I didn't know that before.

STANWOOD JAMES

Another example of the group choosing its own name.
This is also another example of a band of brothers.
Their middle names were Stanwood and James, and . . .
it was more classy sounding than James Stanwood.

Some others I helped put together:

GOOD TIME SINGERS
Vocal group backed up by
instrumental recordings I made.
Well, at least I had a good time.
JILL AND KATI
À la Chad & Jeremy,
Simon & Garfunkel,
Hall & Oates,
et cetera.
LONELY HEARTS
Short for "Simply Red Hot Chili
Peppers Lonely Hearts Band Of
Gypsy King Crimson-Colored Blood
Sweat And Tears For Fears."

R. D. S. JAZZ ENSEMBLE
Designed for an E.D.S. group,
but corporate logo police had
to do their own, so I changed
the "E" to "R" to make it mine.
RANDOM
The lead singer was just making a
list of random names she came
up with, and looking back over
it, she simply said, "Random."
SPANISH VILLAGE
JAZZ ORCHESTRA
Our rehearsal space was
in the neighborhood
called Spanish Village.

SQUID GIZZARDS
Inspired by
buffalo wings &
chicken fingers.
TARPLEY CROSSING
Country and Western band.
Our female singer named it after a
scenic spot in the Texas Hill Country.
TRAVILLER
Portmanteau of
Travis (guitarist)
& Miller (bassist).
